We are thrilled to have Darren Liu back in the lab for the third summer in a row. Darren is working with Rob to extract partial isoform information from MERFISH imaging data based on which exons probes are known to bind. Welcome to the lab Darren!
Happy 2020!
We’re ringing in the new decade with Peter’s annual new year’s image (including a persimmon dried by Caroline)! We’re hoping for exciting science and lots of fun in 2020!
Roozbeh's New Papers!
Ice Cream!
Another year, another ice cream social. Happy end of summer and beginning of the school year!
Julia Olivieri wins Art of Science award
Congratulations to Salzman PhD student Julia Olivieri for winning second place in Stanford’s Art of Science showcase for crocheting six hyperbolic planes!
Welcome Summer Students!
Our Summer students are here and ready to hack! Welcome Nikhita and Darren!
Goodbye Rotation Students
We were so happy to have Yiran Liu and Rachel Ungar as rotation students in the Salzman lab this quarter. Thank you to Rob for making this graphic to send them off in style!
Elisabeth passes quals!!
Today our very own Elisabeth Meyer passed her qualifying exam!
We are all excited for the great work she’ll be doing in the future as a Doctoral Candidate!
Winter Rotation Students!
The Salzman lab is thrilled to have Rachel Ungar and Yiran Liu to our lab for the quarter! Rachel is a PhD student in Genetics, and Yiran is a PhD student in Cancer Biology. Welcome!
Happy 2019 from the Salzman lab!
Our very own Peter Wang has really outdone himself with this awesome art to ring in the last “-teen” year of 2000!
Rob awarded the Blavatnik Fellowship!
Congratulations to Rob Bierman for being awarded a 2018-2019 Blavatnik Fellowship! More information about the fellowship can be found here: https://news.stanford.edu/2018/08/07/10-million-pledge-supports-bioscience-students/
Goodbye Tara!
The Salzmanlab is also sad to say goodbye to Tara after 10 weeks of summer research through the GRIPS program (http://med.stanford.edu/genecamp.html)! Tara learned python from the bottom up and used her new skills to analyze how EBV infection leads to changes in host circular gene expression. Good luck with school this year!
The Salzman Lab says goodbye to Prachi
Prachi has ended her time in the lab and is now pursuing a degree in Project Management.
The Salzman lab says goodbye to Nikhita
The Salzman lab is sad to have to say goodbye to Nikhita after a wonderful and successful 10 week summer research program! Nikhita was a vibrant lab member and performed computational analyses identifying interesting forms of alternative splicing across the tree of life. As a summary, and to no one’s surprise, circles are everywhere! Nikhita’s research culminated in a fantastic presentation and she is excited to push this reserach forward and continue working remotely. The summer is always over too fast.
Ice Cream Break
Thanks to the Beckman Center Ice Cream Social for making our week! Free ice cream for all!

Gucci Joins the Lab!
Gucci has previously worked at Uppsala University in Sweden (where she also earned her PhD) and in other labs at Stanford. She is interested in developing molecular tools as well as analyzing data.
Welcome to the lab Gucci!
The Salzman Lab Says Goodbye to Steven
Steven Barrett graduated with his PhD from Stanford’s Biochemistry Department this June. Steven studied how circular RNAs are produced and regulated, culminating in his thesis: "Mechanistic Analysis of Circular RNA Biogenesis from Yeast to Human.” He is about to start a clinical oncology product development internship at Genentech.
Good luck Steven! We miss you!
Welcoming summer highschooler Tara Ahsan
We welcome summer researcher Tara Ahsan! Tara comes to us from Stanford's GRIPs program!
Hi, I'm Tara a high school student from Sequoia. Some of my hobbies I enjoy are playing tennis, baking and hanging out with friends! This summer I'll be learning to code and researching the genomic context of circles!
Graduate students Julia Olivieri and Elisabeth Meyer join the lab!
We are overwhelmingly excited to welcome Elisabeth (left) and Julia (right) to the lab!
Julia is a second year PhD student in ICME. She graduated from Oberlin College in 2016 with majors in Mathematics and Biology. When she isn't pursuing her interest in developing rigorous mathematical theory for biological experiments, you can probably find her listening to a podcast while biking around Palo Alto.
Elisabeth is a first-year PhD student in Biochemistry. She graduated from Harvard University in 2015 with a BA in Chemistry and Physics, and worked as a technician at the Broad Institute from 2015 to 2017. Outside of lab, she enjoys going to libraries and drinking bubble tea (separately).
Salzman lab summer time bubbles
Peter brought in proprietary bubble formulation and home made bubble wands!
